When we produced a project brochure a while back, outlining our hopes to renovate the tunnels underneath the remains of Williamson's house, a number of respected figures provided endorsements. We were very grateful and reproduce some of them below.

"The philanthropy behind the excavation of these tunnels and the amazing energy and quantity of money expended in their realization deserves our respect and attention and we should do our utmost to support efforts of publicity and conservation. Rest assured that the Society is fully behind you in supporting the splendid work you are carrying out...." Professor Quentin Hughes, Merseyside Civic Society

"Liverpool has an impressive and important underground archaeological heritage .... not least the extraordinary Edge Hill works of Joseph Williamson. FWT are doing excellent work in researching the structures at Edge Hill. Full recording of the Edge Hill voids is only prudent and their proper archaeological investigation should be a high priority, as should an assessment of their potential for conservation and interpretation to a wider public." Subterranea Brittanica

"This is an imaginative and exciting project, building on Liverpool's unique history to promote new opportunities for the future." Louise Ellman MP

"Williamson's Tunnels are an intriguing legacy; their existence is an important part of the rich fibre of the city's history. The restoration and preservation of this unique inheritance is a thrilling prospect for the people of Liverpool and for future generations to learn of a philanthropic past that is all too often forgotten." Professor Peter Toyne, Vice Chancellor & Chief Executive, Liverpool John Moores University

"Joseph Williamson's Tunnels are as evocative in their way as the early Christian catacombs of ancient Rome and they could provide Liverpool with the most extraordinary of all its many attractions." The Ancient Monuments Society

"The Williamson Tunnels and the history behind them are unique in Europe. If properly preserved they will attract visitors from across the European Union." Richard Corbett, MEP Merseyside West

".... delighted to see the progress which you are making and I entirely agree with your vision ....." Professor the Lord Alton of Liverpool

"The tunnels are a fascinating and unique part of Liverpool's hidden history. They represent the altruism of a great Liverpudlian and the skills of a talented workforce. Today we can recognize all of that, take pride in it and gain benefits from it via our growing tourism industry. We've lost the Cavern; let's not lose the tunnels!" Roger Phillips, Radio Merseyside

"Many historic towns and country houses have romantic legends about tunnels. Liverpool is unusual in having a range of real tunnels awaiting further exploration and documentation based on historic facts about their creator and his life." The Victorian Society

" ... Liverpool's past is going to play a very prominent role indeed in its future prosperity. We have what is arguably the finest late Georgian/Victorian city in England to still preserve so much of its original urban landscape. The survival and preservation of Williamson's unique tunnels ought to be considered in this context and your society deserves widespread support in Merseyside and the surrounding districts." Department of History, The University of Liverpool

"As far as I am aware, Williamson's Tunnels are unique and their development could provide an interesting and enjoyable tourist attraction which would benefit the local economy. I wish you well with your project ....." Jane Kennedy, MP
