This web site, www.williamsontunnels.com, went live in February 2000, replacing our previous site at ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/
bill_douglas, which had existed since early 1997. It is designed to meet the following objectives:

  • to provide an on-line source of introductory information to those investigating the Williamson Tunnels story for the first time
  • to provide updates describing progress in today's attempts to renovate and open the tunnels
  • to offer members of FoWT interim information between publication of each issue of the members' newsletter
  • to bring together in one place the many strands of archive material relating to the tunnels
  • to make available to the public the results of research carried out by FoWT

We have learnt that our on-line audience includes:

  • individuals visiting the site casually on a 'one off' basis
  • individuals visiting regularly, including FoWT members
  • schools and college classes
  • organisations pursuing similar interests to our own

The site is written and updated on a voluntary basis by FoWT and does not generate any income.

At its previous location, the FoWT web site employed a hit counter which had reached the figure 17,300. The service providing that hit counter was withdrawn in December 1999. Therefore, the new hit counter at this new site was started at 17,300.

The site is developed in HoTMetal PRO Version 6 and is hosted in Liverpool by Merseyworld Connect, the Internet Centre for Merseyside Businesses at Liverpool University.

Although every attempt has been made to lay this site out such that it is enjoyable on most displays, it is best viewed at a resolution of 800x600 or, ideally, 1024x768. In addition, many images display poorly on a computer which is only displaying 256 colours. If you can, please set your display to 64,000 colours or higher.

At its previous location, the FoWT web site was chosen in November 1998 by Microsoft to be highlighted in their Internet Explorer home user pages. In February 1999, we received the following award:
