This is a portrait of the Reverend Dr. Raffles, one of Williamson's closest acquaintances on the street. For 50 years, Rev. Raffles was the pastor of George Street Chapel (now known as The Blackie). He collected autographs and relics. He was a much sought after guest and raconteur who "made a visit to Mason Street something to be stored up in the mind for future reminiscence". He died in 1863 and his funeral saw Liverpool grind to a halt, with the procession route lined by 50,000 people. |
