· Annual General Meeting |
With a good turnout, we dealt with treasurers and membership reports, election of the committee and then moved on to discussion of our future approach. Members were given three 'directions' to choose from: to support the developers' plans entirely, to oppose the developers' plans entirely or to agree to co-operate with the developers IF they leave the stable yards alone (i.e. restrict their building to the Grinfield Street site) and excavate all the tunnels under the area in which they are interested and allow them to be preserved and permanently opened to the public. The latter option was unanimously accepted and will now form the thrust of our campaign. We are now writing to all parties (including the developers) to inform them of this and keenly await the developers' reply. The rest of the meeting was taken up by good constructive discussion, with some points illustrated by our best efforts to draw a definitive map of the tunnels. |

· Open weekend NOT cancelled! |
Despite the cancellation of the PUBLIC open weekend scheduled for 10th/11th May, the PRIVATE open weekend for the guests of the Liverpool Architecture & Design Trust went ahead on the 3rd May. Friends of Williamson's Tunnels was not invited to take part by the developers but we exercised our right to put up our stands outside the stable yard on the day. We had long talks with the eighty or so visitors who came to see the two main tunnel entrances and many were shocked to hear of the tunnels' plight, which was not explained to them by those conducting the 'tour' inside the yard. Many complained when they saw the lack of organisation and absence of safety precautions inside. All visitors took away our leaflets and a good number have joined the 'Friends' since. |
