· Digging at Stable Yard Tunnels |
|
![]() |
The past few months have seen a great deal of progress at the Stable Yard tunnels. Our colleagues at the JWS are working hard to ready the 'double' and 'corner' tunnels for permanent opening to the public as a visitor attraction in spring 2002. |
| FoWT has been pleased to lend volunteers to assist with the onerous task of digging out rubble which has filled the tunnels for decades. The previously hidden depths appearing anew are very striking. Back in the daylight, renovation of the remaining stable blocks is well under way and we look forward to continuing work with our friends at the JWS in this busy clearance stage. | |

· Heritage Open Weekend |
|

Now something of an annual fixture, the Williamson Tunnels opened for two days in September as part of the national Heritage Open Weekend. We were pleased to work in tandem with the Joseph Williamson Society and Liverpool City Council's Property Services Division to open the stables tunnels, the house tunnels and the Paddington tunnels for the weekend - a previously rare opportunity to see all the currently accessible tunnels in one day. As previously, the visits were oversubscribed, but a good couple of hundred people enjoyed the successful tours. |

· Radio Merseyside Feature |
| We were delighted to take part in a full feature about the tunnels , broadcast on the Monty Lister show on Radio Merseyside in early October. The production crew went into the tunnels on all three parts of the site and Monty did a first-rate job of conveying the atmosphere over the radio, also including on-the-spot interviews with several FoWT experts. |

· New Patron of FoWT |

The Duke of Westminster became the first Patron of Friends of Williamson's Tunnels during the summer. Pictured left enjoying his visit with us in May, His Grace was pleased to accept our invitation and shares our hopes for the future success of the excavation and renovation of the tunnels. |
