This old painting shows the ceremony surrounding the first journey on the Liverpool - Manchester Railway, on 15th September 1830. Stephenson's Rocket took parties of dignitaries and investors from the Chatsworth Cutting, seen here, to Manchester and back. Though the painting is doubtless retrospective, Williamson may well have been among those present alongside the track.
