Central Area: overall comments

The Central area of the tunnels site is best known for the remains of Williamson's house. The house itself is probably best known for the 'banqueting hall' - even though it might never have been one!

Certainly, these features have been known about and explored regularly since Williamson died. However, one cannot help but think that the best is yet to come in the central area. Removal of the mountain of rubble in the banqueting hall will surely reveal passages leading off it to other tunnels and if the Great Tunnel can eventually be accessed and cleared we will be presented with possibly the most spectacular part of the labyrinth. It is also worth noting that, apart from some sections of wall, the facade of the house is the last surviving Williamson construction above ground. It must therefore be saved.

It is to be hoped that mechanisms can be put in place in the near future whereby the house can be leased or bought from the City Council and a large-scale program of clearance and renovation be started. It would take time and a great deal of money, but with the determination and people power of FoWT the processes may well begin soon.

Regarding the house, we owe thanks to the Property Services Department of Liverpool City Council for their kind cooperation in affording us occasional access to the house for research and for visits for our members.
