This is a simple illustration to demonstrate a cross-section of the
rail cutting where it bisects the triple deck tunnel. The cutting (some 80ft
deep) is in the centre, with the three layers of tunnel either side. These
tunnels go right across the back of the central tunnels site, from the boundary
of Williamson's land at Elm Grove to the stable yards. They are very likely to
be filled with rubble now, especially the lower layers. When the army used much of this area in the early 1900s, they are
reputed to have used one of Williamson's tunnels for bridge building practice
and the triple deck tunnel for target practice - two activities not often
carried out underground. |
