This shot, taken in Spring 2001, reveals much about the structure of the Banqueting Hall. The photographer is standing at the lowest point of the hall, with rubble rising behind him towards Mason Street and ahead of him towards the 'gothic' arch high in the wall. About 20 feet from the current floor level the sandstone bedrock walls give way to the barrel-vaulted roof. This section of the hall is some 5 feet wider than the rest, leading to the supposition that the hall may have been constructed in two parts.
