It was the unknown depth of the rubble on the third storey that led FoWT to dig a trial trench in it, between two brick pillars, towards the end of 1999. Already some ten metres underground, we dug down into the ash for a further six metres, shoring up as we went. All the way down, the side walls were hand cut. Before abandoning the dig for safety reasons, we pushed a three metre rod into the earth at the bottom of the trench and still didn't hit solid ground!
