| Paddington - Overall comments |
|
Until FoWT began investigating the possibility of tunnels beneath what was the Paddington Gardens estate in 1998, there had been little hope of, and even less interest in, finding any parts of the Williamson Tunnels beyond the long-known sites at Williamson's house and the stable yards. What was found effectively broadened the boundary of the Williamson tunnels and pushed outwards the point from which further tunnels may be found in future. FoWT has undertaken a process to continually work towards a full-scale clearance of the tunnels under the Williamson Student Village, with a view to them being opened to the public. This will surely open up new 'linking' tunnels - perhaps joining up with those under Williamson's house, perhaps heading away towards St. Mary's church or under Highgate Street and beyond. Any such discoveries may well afford the opportunity to excavate anew the cellars which were temporarily emptied but had to be re-filled before construction of the Village. We are indebted to the owners of the WSV site, without whose generous cooperation the tunnels beneath would have been lost. |
