| Stables Area: overall
comments |
|
The Stables area contains the image of Williamson's labyrinth most often portrayed - the 'double tunnel'. Just a few feet away is the well tunnel and, a few yards further away, the 'corner' or 'south' tunnel. All of them intriguing and yet only part of what is in this area. The rediscovery in April 2002 of the legendary 'triple decker' tunnel was of great importance. This gigantic tunnel is the biggest feature of the labyrinth that can be accessed today and gives an impression of the sheer scale of Williamson's original undertaking. It also bodes well for future discoveries in the stables area. This is not to ignore the
attractiveness and importance of the old Lord Mayor's stables themselves, some
of which remain and hopefully will be re-used in future. |
