| The famous 'double tunnel' - two arches one on top of the other, with no vertical access between them. Seen here in October 2001, the excavation work going on at the time revealed traces of a third layer (the triple tunnel?) below ground level. At one time this would have been just one in a long row of similar arches all the way along the back of the Mason Street houses, designed by Williamson to support the gardens above. The 'well tunnel' is just visible on the right. |
