Moving into the rear section and looking back out towards
daylight, this view reveals the strange construction of this area. We can see a
gap near the roof leading to another void above the corner tunnel itself. Here
we would have been underneath houses built by Williamson, with the bedrock on
the left providing solid foundations for them and the hand-built tunnel itself
ahead of us providing support for the houses' rear gardens. Pick marks left by
Williamson's workers are visible in the side walls. |
